Unlike the grey, dour outcrops to the north, or the grand, corporate houses in the south (of Britain), Otočec is a true fairytale castle: built as a suitable home for lords and dukes (or if you prefer, ladies and duchesses), rather than as some huge medieval wheel-less tank. Anyway, given that it stands in the middle of the Krka river, the only land it could conceivably defend would be the little island it stands on.

There are records of a castle on this island dating back to the 13th century, and noble families have been living here most of the time since. Until the last couple of centuries, that is, when much of the central European nobility either lost its way or worse, its head.

In recent years, the castle led itself a new career as a hotel, and in 2008 the owners decided to invest in a complete refurbishment of the inside, commissioning some of the best artisans in the country to make something very special indeed.

Every single piece of furniture seems to invite you to caress it, not least because you have to wonder how wood can be convinced to take on such beautiful, geometric shapes.

All in all, the perfect venue for the perfect wedding.

Your wedding at Otočec

Weddings at Otočec Like the castle itself, your wedding at Otočec will be a blend of old and new - but most of all, it will be made especially for you. We will talk through all of the possibilities with you, ensuring that your day will truly be one of the happiest of your life.

Whether you want a bijoux ceremony for just you and close friends, or trumpet fanfares and torchlit parades, almost anything is possible at Otočec.

We can also arrange a church ceremony in the local chapel (but please note that you can only be married by registrar in Slovenia).

Here are a few of the ideas that you might like the sound of:

Arrival - from a simple walk across the bridge together, to a limousine, horse and carriage, or even a boat across the Krka.
Greetings - everyone is met by the celebrant and maiden, who will announce your impending nuptuals, or perhaps you could be welcomed by the Knight of the Castle in all his finery, together with pages and maidens.
Musical Accompaniment - maybe a single violinist on arrival, possibly a choir for the ceremony... even a fanfare as you cross the bridge!
Ceremony - can be held in the courtyard, or the gardens, or on the greensward of the island. We can also arrange a church blessing in the chapel nearby.
Banquet - as you can see below, there are no less than four restaurants to choose from, all serving world-class cuisine.
Seasons - weddings can be held at Otočec all year round; we can arrange ceremonies in the snow... or marquees for sultry summer evenings.
Night-time - we can arrange for a torchlit ceremony under the twinkling Dolenjska stars.
Traditions - you can include all manner of local traditions in your ceremony: purify your soul by washing your hands in wine, offering a silver coin to the Krka river... you know - romantic stuff!
Be different - your rings can arrive by parachute (really!); have your marriage certificate printed on hand-made paper in the castle print shop; swipe the top from a bottle of sparkly with a sword (everybody else: stand back).
Pampering - Krka also owns the excellent Balnea and Vitarium spas, just a little way down the road. Whether you want some serious pampering, sweating it out in the saunas, a relaxing massage, or just splishy-splashing about in the pools, there's something for you and all of your guests. We can even pre-book some treatments as wedding gifts for your guests.
Accommodation - You and up to fourteen of your guests will stay at the castle (your room will be gratis), in some of the most luxurious rooms in the region. More guests (over 150) can stay at the Šport Hotel across the way, while those who prefer a little rustic charm have the opportunity to stay at the lovely Šeruga (see below).

The cuisine and banquet

Banquets at Otočec Otočec has made itself a bit of a reputation for the cuisine served upon its beautiful tables (as you might expect from one of our hotels). The chef and his staff have perfected a range of dishes that would grace the best restaurants in Europe.

The cooking is mostly based on traditional Slovenian fare, but with a light, modern touch... although not too light: you don't want your guests to go hungry!

There are two restaurants to choose from.

The Castle Restaurant will seat up to 50 guests, or for a more intimate celebration you can use the Hunter's Room, which seats ten.

The Tango restaurant in the Šport Hotel seats up to 200 guests, plus another 120 in the Šport Hall.

You could also dine al fresco in the castle grounds (130), and a marquee can be arranged for the less clement months.

For your wedding guests

Accommodation

First of all, you will want your guests to stay in the best accommodation available. As well as the castle itself and its sister hotel over the road, close by is one of our most popular tourist farms, Šeruga. Don't worry about the 'farm' bit - that's just a tourist designation over here, indicating that it is a rural, working property (that is, your guests won't be sleeping in the hay loft, or wading through piggy poo, or woken by the wenches on their way to milk a moo at half-past nothing in the morning).

Šeruga is almost ridiculously idyllic: the guest house sits across a little trout stream from the family house, from where there will be a waft of freshly-baked bread in the morning. The rooms are simply charming, as are the owners, Lili and her daughter Eva Šeruga.

Activities

There are absolutely loads of things that your guests can do, whether relaxing, pampering or just plain crazy:

River sports on the Krka River (White water rafting, kayaking... or just a spot of easy rowing)
Golf - there is a very nice nine-hole course nearby
Tennis - both indoor and outdoor courts are available at the Šport Hotel complex
Swimming in the pools of the spas
Hiking
Trail riding and road cycling
Archery, fishing, hunting... the list is almost endless!

Wines Note that the accompanying wines for your wedding day will be of the finest quality. For those of you not aux fait with Slovenian wines, consider that they consistently win many medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards. You could say that these are wines to be sniffed at.
