Weddings at Lake Bohinj

I suppose you could say that Bohinj is the more 'grown-up' of Slovenia's two main lakes. It is by far the largest and its waters benefit from being 'in-line' with the Sava river, meaning that the water is changed much more often than that in Lake Bled. It is teeming with fish and wildlife (all of which is benign), while its shores and the land for miles around features a spectacular display of alpine flora.

As a backdrop for a wedding, it would be hard to think of a more impressive natural canvas: the dark, placid lake reflecting the heights of Vogel and the Triglav National Park beyond, the lush verdant landscape, dotted with brightly-coloured flowers in the summer, the gold, bronze and ochres of the autumn... followed, of course, by a true winter wonderland.

Yes, you can be married in any season; your only problem is to figure out which is the most beautiful.

We can arrange your wedding at either of the hotels (Vila Park or Kristal), on the shores of the lake, or on the lake cruiser. Maybe one day in the lake itself, but we need to find a registrar who can swim well enough.

We have arranged special rates with Vila Park and Hotel Kristal, so that you can visit for a couple of nights and see for yourself what a beautiful place Lake Bohinj is. Call or email us for details.

Your wedding at Lake Bohinj

Weddings at Lake BohinjOur simplest wedding at Lake Bohinj was for Neil and Lisa in 2007. Neil had told us that the holiday he was booking was really a honeymoon - and that he and his girlfriend were off to Scotland to get married, as they didn't want a huge wedding.

"So, what about a tiny wedding in a huge place?" I asked. What followed was indeed a tiny wedding - just the two of them at Vila Park, with the owner, the fabulous Jana, as their witness - but it was no less romantic for that. The ceremony took place in the middle of a very snowy winter in the garden of the hotel - as Al Green sang: simply beautiful.

Then again, you might want something a little more indulgent - consider these options:

  • Welcome - A couple in traditional attire will welcome the couple and their guests at the pier. There will be a red carpet laid to the boat, and the couple will be offered bread and salt as a sign of good luck in their future lives (don't worry - the food gets more interesting later!)
  • Ceremony - Once everyone is aboard, the boat leaves for the centre of the lake, where the ceremony is completed.
  • Entertainment - On the way back, an actor will tell the story of the local mythical beast, the Zlatorog (Goldhorn).
  • Sustenance - Local delicacies and sparkling wine will be served on your return to the pier (and onboard, if you wish).
  • Knight's entourage - Exactly that: an entourage of knights on horseback. Plus fire-eater, of course.
  • Music - An accordian player playing traditional Slovenian ditties.
  • Transport of delight - a carriage to take the bride, groom and witnesses on, either to the Church of St John for a religious blessing, or back to the hotel.

The cuisine and banquet

Wedding feastsBoth Vila Park and Hotel Kristal offer excellent local cuisine, the only difference being that if there are more than sixteen of you, your wedding banquet will need to be at the Kristal.

Typical dishes might include:

  • Roast Goose with Å¡truklji (local dumplings)
  • Brook trout (caught fresh that day, of course)
  • Truffle risotto (local truffles, natch)
  • Roast game (boar, venison)
  • Local mountain cheeses
  • Huuuge desserts!

We would also recommend that we help you in your choice of wines, as you do have the opportunity to sample some of the most interesting - and award-winning - wines in Europe.

For your wedding guests

Vila ParkAccommodation

Vila Park is a special little hotel, situated at the western end of the lake and sitting next to a pretty stream. If you have a small party of up to 20 guests, this would be an ideal place for you all to stay. In fact, if you would rather not have a 'watery' wedding, we can organise the ceremony in the Vila Park grounds, next to the babbling brook (OK - still a bit watery).

Hotel Kristal is a larger hotel (up to a hundred guests) in the town at the eastern end of the lake. It is family-owned and run and in fact started life as a restaurant, many years ago, so you can be assured that the cuisine and wedding banquet will be excellent.

For the best of both worlds, we would recommend that you and you close friends or relatives stay at Vila Park, while most guests stay at the Kristal, where the reception would be held.

Canoeing on Lake BohinjEntertainment and Activities

Of course, for many of your guests, travelling to Slovenia in order to celebrate your wedding will be enough fun... but then, why waste an opportunity? Slovenia is an amazing place for you (or them) to indulge in all manner of madness, including:

  • Icelandic pony trekking
  • River sports, including kayaking, white water rafting, fishing - even swimming
  • Winter sports (in the, er, winter)
  • Hiking, trekking, walking and ambling (my favourite)
  • Cycling - both off-road and the other one... road.
  • We can also arrange something a little more cultural, like a day in Bled, or a wine tasting evening.

We can pre-arrange any number of activities, spa breaks, equipment hire - whatever makes you and your guests happy.

All you have to do is ask.
